SPECIAL SCHOOL VISIT
On 26th February 2026, the fourth semester students of SUM College of Teacher Education organized a Special School Visit as part of their practical exposure and community engagement programme. The visit aimed to understand the functioning of special schools, the teaching-learning strategies adopted for children with special needs, and to interact with teachers and students.
The students were divided department-wise and visited different special schools.
The English Department visited Shanthideepam Special School, Chala. The Physical Science Department visited Jaycee Special School, Dharmadam. The Social Science Department visited Ashrayam Special School Thottada. The Natural Science & Mathematics Department visited Thanal Special School, Kanhirode.
At each institution, the students were warmly welcomed by the principals, teachers, and staff members. An introductory session was arranged where the principals briefed the students about the history of the institution, the types of disabilities catered to, admission procedures, curriculum followed, and various therapeutic services provided such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, and vocational training.
The students actively interacted with special educators to understand individualized education programmes (IEP), classroom management techniques, behavior modification strategies, and the importance of patience and empathy while dealing with children with special needs. The teachers shared their experiences, challenges, and the emotional satisfaction they derive from their profession. The students also interacted with the children and conducted various games and engaging activities suitable to their abilities. Simple indoor games, action songs, storytelling sessions, drawing activities, and fun-based learning tasks were organized. These activities helped in building rapport with the children and brought smiles to their faces. The trainees ensured that all activities were inclusive and encouraging. The visit provided the trainees with firsthand experience of inclusive and special education practices. It enhanced their understanding of the diverse needs of learners and the importance of compassion, adaptability, and creativity in teaching. The interaction with the school authorities and students was both inspiring and enlightening.
